Architectural Monuments to Know: Pyramids & the Sphinx
Ideas to Know: The blending of religious beliefs and immortality in art.

Technicolor Pyramids

Our first art assignment is to create an Egyptian Pyramid inspired landscape. Students must include at least 3 pyramids with a horizon line. Instead of realistically adding color and value to the drawing, students will show their skills in value by coloring each pyramid form a different color. Even the sand and the sky can be an interesting hue. Students are challenged by determining an invisible light source and creating shadows in appropriate places on and around the forms.

Ancient Greece

Greece History

Ancient Greece began about 1500 B.C. Tribes moved and settled around the Aegean Sea. Greece remained in city-states because of the geography of the mountains and water separating the settlements. Greece weakened because of the lack of communication, pride and jealousy of each other. Greece came under attack from outsiders which forced them to form the Delian League to withstand being overtaken. Athens, now the capitol of Greece, was the center of control.

 Architecture

The Parthenon was a temple built in honor of the Greek goddess, Athena. The temple is located in Athens on top of the Acropolis, a sacred hill of temples. The columns, frieze and raking cornice are all examples of classic Greek architecture.

Art

The Greeks were great artisans. However only the sculptures still remain. Idealized statues were made of people in prominent positions and pottery was decorated to narrate everyday scenes and Greek mythology.

Drama

Drama as an art form began with the Greeks. They help events in honor of Dionysius and had competitions in playwriting, and performances. Greek drama had simplistic scenery (skene) and masks to transform the characters. A chorus was used to narrate the play through song and dance. A messenger would announce the scene changes. The goal of Greek Drama was to develop the intellect and debate moral issues.
